As they say “One thing leads to
another” the same goes with problems, if you would just let the problem grow
and not take action immediately this may cause more problems ahead. Low
self-esteem, bullying, and consistency of cleaning are some of the problems
that the students of Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School are
encountering based from the surveys that we’ve conducted on the previous blogs.

Bullying
is the act of hurting someone intentionally especially when the behavior is
repeated over time. This is a very serious problem that all schools around the
world are facing and should be taken seriously. Bullying comes in four forms
namely: Physical, Social, Verbal, and Cyber bullying. According to
the site ‘Ditch the label’ “In order to mask how they actually feel about
themselves, some people who bully focus attention on someone else. They try to
avoid any negative attention directed at them by deflecting. But know they
might look in the mirror at home and hate the way they look. There is so much
pressure to live up to beauty and fitness standards. We are taught to compare
ourselves to others, instead of embracing our own beauty.”

One
of the many effects of bullying to a student is low self-esteem. This is an
individual’s overall emotional evaluation of their worth. Low self-esteem is
often associated with negative feelings such as sadness, depression, anxiety,
etc. Students with low self-esteem may have troubles in gaining confidence and
thus, affecting their performance in school.
Bullying
and low self-esteem are directly connected since bullying can be the main
reason onto why a student lacks self-confidence. The victims are afraid that
they may be judged and criticized by their classmates if they make a mistake
while speaking in front of the class.
Another
problem that can be connected with this are the cleaning habits of the students
to their environment particularly inside their classrooms and personal hygiene
deficiency of the students. "Personal hygiene deficiency diseases have
been found to be a serious public health problem and people often affected are
school children. These have been attributed to inadequate knowledge of personal
hygiene and its practices.” (Oluwafemi Temitayo Ilesanmi, 2017)
After
conducting the surveys from the previous blogs the results showed that
bullying, low self-esteem, and cleaning habits contribute to the student’s
overall state inside the school and thus, affects their social life and academic
performance.

People like to
make fun of those that are different to them or someone who they think that
does not belong or fit in. Students may become vulnerable to the act of
bullying if they do not practice proper hygiene. This can be an act of verbal
bullying wherein the bully would call the victim names. Cyber if they would go
to the extent of humiliating the victim on social media, and sometimes even
going through with physical bullying wherein they would physically harm the
student just for their own satisfaction. Most of the time when a student is
being bullied because of his/her personal hygiene it would be associated mostly
with social bullying. The victim’s classmates or the people around him/her may
not include the student into their social circle and continue to treat the
victim as an outcast, this then leads to having low self-esteem.
If
students has low self-esteem they cannot concentrate in class, does not
cooperate in group or oral activities, etc. Maintaining the cleanliness of your
classroom is part of the group activities of the school in order to teach
students how important it is to keep your surroundings clean. If students have
low self-esteem and experiences bullying, they might find it hard to work with
other people and would think of cleaning as an unimportant task. How can the
students know how to maintain the cleanliness of their surroundings if they
can’t even take care of themselves and practice proper hygiene?
We
should teach our children about the negative effects of bullying to other
people and make them realize that it is a wrong thing to do. Getting caught in
the act of bullying someone can seriously hurt your child’s future and image
since there is now a law implemented against bullying. It is
the "REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10627" or the"Anti-Bullying Act of
2013".The ones being
bullied can experience depression, anxiety, etc. that may cause suicidal
thoughts and can destroy the child’s emotional and mental state.
In order to overcome
having low self-esteem first of all, the students need to learn how to relax
since stress plays a huge role in self-esteem. They should also set goals and
think about what they would like to achieve. Practicing how to be confident is
also the key. Lastly, students should take care and accept themselves,
everything takes time and the only person who can help you is yourself.
Personal hygiene must
also be taken seriously and must be practiced by everyone. You should bathe
regularly, trim one’s nails, brush and floss, wash your hands, and get enough
sleep.
One problem can
really lead to a series of problems if not handled properly. Low self-esteem
can be prevented if there would be no bullying, bullying can be prevented if
the parents would teach their children to respect other people and raise them
the right way, also a child can avoid being bullied if he/she is taught how to
manage one’s personal hygiene.
